Best Pet Insurance in BC (2026) - 6 Providers Compared for British Columbia

By PetInsuranceGuide.ca•October 21, 2026•Updated October 21, 2026

If you live in British Columbia, you are probably wondering whether pet insurance works any differently in BC and which company to pick. We compared the six providers on this site using the information on their own websites and independent Trustpilot ratings.

One thing up front: none of the six providers publishes BC-specific prices or BC-specific policy terms. Where we cannot verify something for BC, we say so rather than guess.

📌 Quick Answer

  • Highest Trustpilot ratings: Fetch and Spot, both 4.6/5.
  • No payout limits, up to 90% reimbursement: Trupanion, 4.4/5 across 12,080 reviews.
  • Based in BC: Furkin is based in North Vancouver, but it has only 6 Trustpilot reviews (4.1/5), so the rating tells you little yet.
  • BC-specific discount: BCAA members get a preferred rate on Pets Plus Us, but Pets Plus Us has a 1.6/5 rating on Trustpilot.

Does Pet Insurance Work Differently in BC?

Based on what the providers publish, the core rules are the same across Canada:

  • Pre-existing conditions are excluded. Every provider excludes conditions that showed signs or symptoms before coverage began or during the waiting period.
  • You choose any licensed vet. Trupanion, Fetch, Petsecure and Spot each say you can visit any licensed vet in Canada.
  • Your price depends on where you live. Pets Plus Us says cost depends on factors such as your pet's age, breed, location, coverage level, deductible and reimbursement options. Petsecure says its premiums vary with where in Canada you live.

What changes for BC residents is mostly which providers are available and which discounts you can access, not the coverage rules.

BC-Specific Details Worth Knowing

BCAA pet insurance

BCAA offers pet insurance through its partnership with Pets Plus Us. According to BCAA:

  • BCAA members receive a preferred rate of 13.5% off, and non-members receive 9% off.
  • Pet insurance is sold and administered by PTZ Insurance Services Ltd. and underwritten by Northbridge Insurance.
  • BCAA receives commissions from PTZ for referrals.
  • Products, features, rates and discounts may vary by province and territory and are subject to change.

If you are already a BCAA member, this discount is worth including in your comparison. Keep in mind that Pets Plus Us has a 1.6/5 rating on Trustpilot, with customers reporting premium increases, so compare its total cost and reviews against the alternatives before you decide.

Two providers with a North Vancouver address

Furkin and Trupanion's Canadian operation list the same North Vancouver address. Furkin's policies are underwritten by GPIC Insurance Company, while Trupanion's are underwritten by Accelerant Insurance Company of Canada or GPIC Insurance Company. Both are sold and administered by Canada Pet Health Insurance Services, Inc.

Furkin says it is available in all provinces and territories except Quebec and Nunavut, so it is available to BC residents. It is a newer company with very few Trustpilot reviews, so it is hard to judge from ratings alone.

What Pet Insurance Costs in Canada

We could not find independent BC pricing. The one cost figure with a source is a national one: Fetch quotes NAPHIA (the North American Pet Health Insurance Association) as saying the average cost to insure a dog in Canada was $1,175 in 2025, and the average cost to insure a cat was $601. This is a Canada-wide average and not a BC figure.

Your own quote depends on your pet's breed, age, location, deductible and reimbursement level, so get quotes for your specific pet rather than relying on averages.

How to Choose in BC

1. Start with your pet's age and health

Pre-existing conditions are excluded by every provider, so insuring a young, healthy pet protects you from the most exclusions. Fetch and Spot have no upper age limit for enrollment, while Trupanion and Furkin require pets to be under 14 when they enroll.

2. Decide how much protection you want

  • Highest payout flexibility: Trupanion states up to 90% reimbursement with no payout limits. Its deductible is per condition, and its premiums are higher than most competitors.
  • Customizable plans: Fetch lets you choose reimbursement, deductible and annual maximum.
  • High annual limit: Furkin offers up to $20,000 per year at 80% reimbursement.

3. Check reviews, not just features

Trustpilot ratings range from 4.6/5 down to 1.6/5 across these six providers. Small review samples (Furkin has 6, Petsecure has 31) should be read with caution, in either direction.

4. Compare quotes with your BC postal code

Because location affects price, run the same pet through two or three quote tools with your postal code. Compare the deductible, reimbursement percentage and annual limit, not just the monthly price.

Final Thoughts

For most BC pet owners, the practical shortlist is Fetch, Spot and Trupanion, the three with the highest ratings across a meaningful number of reviews. If you are a BCAA member, it is worth getting a Pets Plus Us quote to see how the discount compares. Whatever you choose, read the waiting periods and exclusions before you buy.
